An industrial as well as a domestic product engineered under heat and pressure using different forms of wood like fibres, sawdust, chips, flakes etc. that are combined together using a synthetic adhesive to bring out fine sheets that have varying thickness and usages.

These wood based Panels are used vastly in furniture, kitchen cabinets, window frames, door parts, trim moulding, mill work and even laminate flooring, Floor Partition etc. and are simultaneously used in an industrial setup like building products as well. These sheets or wood-based panels are manufactured with distinct physical specifications as per its need and usages.

Globally, the MDF to plywood consumption ratio is 65:35, but in India, the ratio is skewed in favour of the plywood at 10:90. This number suggests that there is enough room for the growth of MDF in the country in the future. Further, unlike plywood, MDF is a capital-intensive business and thus, unorganised presence is nil in this segment. Further, another demand driver for MDF is the rising requirement for ready-made furniture. It is also more suitable for aesthetic purposes over other substrate products as it has strong carving capabilities.

South India Remains the largest consumer of MDF, accounting for 45% of India’s MDF consumption, followed by the North with 30%.

Apart from these factors there is growing furniture market which is enjoying active support of the government that will add more demand for wood panel industry in the coming years.
